Differences between CNC milling machines and general lathes
The composition of a CNC turning and milling machine is actually not much different from the assembly of a CNC lathe, but in terms of complexity, it is more complicated than the assembly of a CNC lathe.
What is the difference? The explanation is as follows:
1. Spindle
The difference between a turning-milling machine and a general lathe is that the main axis has an encoder, a brake disc, and a brake (as shown below). The decoder allows the C-axis to perform one thousandth of an angle resolution when executing the C-axis movement. The function of the brake disc is to prevent the angle from slipping when executing the C-axis, making the accuracy more precise.
2. Dota
The difference between the turret and the general lathe is that the turret is a power turret with the function of milling, and has an additional motor to perform milling. In addition, compared with the traditional turret, the turret has more tools (12/16/20 tools) and can also perform semi-split actions, allowing more tools.
3. Number of Axis
Compared with traditional lathes, turning and milling machines have at least three more axes, the most basic of which are:
X/Z/C axis lathe
X/Z/C/Y axis lathe
X/Z/C/Y/X2/Z2/Y2 and more
Multi-axis means more possibilities, allowing the milling machine to perform more and more complex processes
4. Controller
The controller is usually a higher-end controller, such as Fanuc's Oi TF Plus, 31i/32i, etc., and the number of motors is much greater than that of ordinary lathe controllers, and the executable programs, memory, speed, and functions are also much more, such as skyving, beveling, etc.
5. Accuracy
Compared with general lathes, milling machines can achieve higher precision because they save secondary loading processes such as secondary milling or back processing.
6. Floor space
The floor space occupied is larger than that of a general lathe, but if compared with a lathe and a milling machine, the floor space occupied is much smaller.
